About the Theatre
The Theatre EBE STIGNANI was founded in 1810 for initiative of some Imola citizens led by baron Andrea Costa mayor of Imola. The previous theatre (Cavalieri Associati) had been destroyed by a fire, so the Church of San Francesco was acquired to build the new theatre.
Works had been assigned to Eng, Giuseppe Magistretti and were completed in 1812. But after only 3 years it was closed by Pope Pio VII ordinance because it derived from a sacred place. It was re-opened only in 1831 and after having been transformed in Municipal theatre, it was subject to may phases of restoration, in 1853-56, in 1966-67, and in 1970-74. The last restructuring works, aimed at up dating the plant to the safety rules, were completed in 2010
