The nineteen fifties witnessed Cinecittà being the privileged location for making such epic movies as Ben Hur and Cleopatra due to the excellent craftsmanship available in the area. With local skills including the making of effects machinery, scenery and costumes, although the early American productions on location in Rome brought out much of their own equipment, the high transport costs soon turned the attention towards on-site manufacturing expertise.
The original Ianiro factory was a mechanical workshop for making electrical and lighting equipment for American production and rental houses, and it soon became a trusted reference supplier for the movie industry district that was growing up around the Studios. The Ianiro family took the initiative of designing its own lighting and grip products according to the precise local demand for lightweight and compact lighting fixtures.
The Sixties brought a spreading outwards of Cinecittà's productions from Rome to a host of other destinations.
With this evolution the Ianiro name was to earn worldwide renown in the film industry for both its production and international rental services. The Italian Neorealism films gave birth to a great school of film and photography . Oscars and other European prizes were awarded to directors, some of whom had been working closely with the Ianiro family members. From 1960 to 1970 some had also helped in designing the first Ianiro halogen luminaires fitted with the American GE QuartzLine tungsten bulbs (the famous "redheads"). From the end of the sixties onwards the Ianiro factory designed its first daylight luminaires, beginning with the newly introduced Osram Hmi 575W double ended bulb.
The seventies and the eighties
The Seventies saw the growth of the TV industry and, to meet its needs, Ianiro adapted its product line cater to the new applications, thus becoming as much a pioneer and leader in television lighting systems as it had been for the film ones.
Parallel the factory consolidated its leadership in film with the first series of HMI projectors powered by ballasts flicker free Following the dissolution of the original family structure, precisely in the years ‘ 70, and the subsequent sale of the company, Aldo Ianiro, alone in the family, has remained active in the industry. He founded the Ianiro Aldo (Film Service) Ltd in 1972, company of which is currently Chairman and that counts over thirty years of activity.
The company successfully matched the sale and rental of lighting equipment and accessories, developing at the same time the production of portable fixtures. Especially in the ‘80s this range was expanded and distributed in the new growing sectors of advertising photography, wedding video and cine-video reportage. The growth took place through new sales channels in Italy and abroad, followed by his daughter Fabrizia who joined the company in 1985.
The nineties
In 1994 Roberto Melis and Arcadio Di Staso joined the company to flank Aldo and Fabrizia Ianiro in both production and distribution. These two new partners were not coincidental additions to the team. They had already worked with the Ianiro brothers for many years and had also gained much experience with other firms of the sector.
This new corporate line-up brought additions to the sales catalogues for the worlds of entertainment and theatre, thereby broadening the product line to revolutionary products such as the first moving-mirror and moving-heads lights from United States.
The combination of strengths among the partners proved winning in the area of “turn-key” systems. The integration of the original products with the recently acquired "exclusive" and prestigious ones gave new and added advantages to television studios and theatres.
A strong area became the one commonly called 'entertainment'. After some already very rewarding years of teamwork, the partners took up the new opportunities emerging for entertainment equipment, which was increasingly being demanded in hybrid contexts. Indeed, multi-functional halls, auditoriums, trade fairs, institutional and private premises, show rooms and museums, and much more besides, will be used more and more as public-use environments that require professional lighting and projection solutions.
By the late ’90s the company specialised with a cross-sector approach by offering professional lighting installations that were technically and visually compatible with civil architectural contexts. Also the product portfolio cross over the lighting by implementing new accessories for the camera shooting, such as broadcast lenses and tripods.
Today
The turning point of this venture was the contract for Rome's "Renzo Piano" Auditorium in 2002. Here, some 103 television-type hoists with motors and power systems needed installing and making compatible with the venue's architecture and design. The project amounted to Italy's largest television installation in a non-dedicated TVcontext.
From this installation and many others to follow, the partners developed the idea of producing their own suspended systems to obtain greater flexibility in the design phases.
Thus, early 2007, Ianiro Alutek S.r.l. was set up, with partners of extensive experience, to make aluminium truss and other structures dedicated to the technical lighting and the exhibition sectors.
Also the technology in the early 2000s helped applications to cross sectors. In particular, in 2004 Digital Lighting became a real link between lighting and video. This system matched a sophisticated software for creating contents and a revolutionary hardware : the moving-head video projectors that expanded enormously the potentials of conventional moving-head lights. It merged lighting designers and video editors professionalism. It also created a corporate area dedicated to video and broadcasting. An open-minded vision wherein applications and technologies are not closed off areas but open, multi-functional ones.
Last but not least, also the Ianiro production is now at a turning point. The introduction in 2007 of the first IANIRO LED portable fixtures marks only the first step of a long journey towards new LED systems for television studios and entertainment, keeping pace with LEDs technical improvement.
